Bridging industrial gaps, dotMobi is recognized by experts
Beijing, China, Sept. 18, 2007 – dotMobi, the consortium behind the only Internet address created specially for mobile phones, has won the Special Contribution Golden Olive Award at the 2nd Mobile Phone Application Conference for its development work in enabling access to the Internet on a mobile phone.
"Winning this award represents the industry’s recognition for dotMobi’s strong efforts and outstanding achievements in the development of the mobile web," said Kun Qian, general manager of dotMobi Greater China. "Chinese users of the mobile web are increasingly on the rise and we are positioning dotMobi as the brand for them."
With the support of the world-leading mobile and Internet investors, dotMobi is accelerating the development of the state-of-the-art mobile Internet tools and content, boosting the industry’s growth in every stage of the value chain, Kun Qian added.
The rapid growth of mobile communications has triggered a demand for the mobile web in recent years, but most web sites are designed for access via a personal computer, making them hard to navigate when using a mobile device. As a result, there is a lack of content and difficulty in using mobiles for information, services and applications. This is where dotMobi comes in.
The consortium has developed dotMobi Style Guides, which are based on the open standards of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The guides provide mobile web developers with design principles and solutions, aimed to help mobile phone users have an excellent experience in using the mobile web.
"The mobile web is a new technological power, and as such, the majority of consumers may not be familiar with its potential features and applications," said Song Junde, a member of the judging panel for the Golden Olive Award, who is also a member of Communications Science and Technology Committee of Ministry of Information Industry (MII).
"High quality content and active user experiences will no doubt be the principal impetus of mobile web development. dotMobi provides an open platform for content providers, which is helpful in innovating and optimizing the user experience in mobile web navigation and to bring diversified applications to market," added Song. He is also a member of Evaluation Team in Academic Degrees Committee of State Council, and Director of Degree Committee and Dean of Postgraduate College of Beijing University of Post and Telecommunication.
The Golden Olive Award is an annual award by Mobile China magazine with the support of 50 key media and more than 100 experts. The award recognizes technological innovations in mobile phone applications and promotes cooperation between enterprises that develop mobile phone applications and related industries.
In addition to dotMobi, companies such as Nokia WidSets, Qualcomm and Symbian Company were also awarded honorable special contribution prizes due to their efforts in building mobile phone applications.
